random fun stuff

  • Geocaching- Geocaching is so cool! I learned about it last year from a 6th grade boy who likes to search for caches and also hides many around his community.  Geocaching is a real-life treasure hunting game where you use a GPS system.  The caches are hidden all over the world and can be anything from small boxes with a log book or large containers with different kinds of objects or special coins.  Check out geocaching.com for more info.

  • Minecraft- I don't know much about this game, but I know a bunch of 5-8th grade boys who absolutely love it.  It's an online video game that offers a free downloadable version.  You can construct your own world out of cubes and then try to survive what the game throws at you.  Check it out if it sounds like something you'd be into.  Minecraft.net

  • Public Speaking Game- The goal is simple: discuss a topic for 1 minute without using "like", "um" or "uh".  You may choose one of the topics below, make one up, or for a challenge, have a family member write a topic for you that you only look at right before you start speaking.

  • - Some topic ideas: What would you do if you were home alone for the weekend?; What would be in your dream room?; If you could throw the best party you could imagine, what would it be like?; Describe the craziest dream you ever had; What would you do if you were stranded on an island?

    - If you want to practice your skills of speaking fluidly in front of a group, this may help.  You can time yourself and practice alone, in front of your family or with friends.  I always have fun playing and watching this game.  It's a lot harder than it seems-  I've failed in front of a class of people a couple of times before :-)  Practicing definitely helps, because you will start naturally coming up with strategies for achieving the goal.  If you make it past a minute, see how far you can go!
